Flax (Linum perenne)
First-year-blooming perennial, though the show is definitely much better the second and following years. Flax, the plant from which linen is made, produces beautiful, silky, 1-in., sky blue blooms that open in the morning, bloom for the day, and drop off by late afternoon. Then, miraculously it seems, the plant is covered with blooms anew the next day! Plants form arching bunches of straight stems with narrow, almost needle-like leaves; flower buds are pendent and teardrop shaped. Will bloom lightly in July its first year, then in May and June of subsequent years. Full sun. 2–21/2 ft. Perennial (Zone 4, –30°F), 250 seeds.
